RustStop Rx100 under
Electron Microscope
These photos depict 3mm steel
plates that had been coated with three coats of RustStop Rx100 in January
2004, and cut a cross-section from it. This sample was taken to the
Electron Microscope Unit at the University of Durban-Westville.

Photo 1
In the first photo, (@ x170), you
can see the steel plate section on the left and the coating of RustStop
Rx100 along the surface on the right. Notice how the Rx100 has penetrated
into the hollows and minute fissures in the surface of the plate,
particularly towards the centre of the layer. The blurred activity that is
visible above the layer in the photo is the solvent still flashing-off while
the Rx100 cures.

In the second photo, (@ x500) you
can see the layer of RustStop Rx100 with the volatile action of the solvent
flashing-off. The upper portion of the layer shows minute bubbles
of solvent, which are in the process of migrating to the surface before
flashing-off to form the non-porous surface that will eventually remain.
